The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District serves about 7,000 people living in and around the towns of Vinton, Garrison, and Shellsburg. Centered 30 miles northwest of Cedar Rapids and southeast of Waterloo, VSCSD offers elementary schools in both the Vinton and Shellsburg communities with separate buildings for the middle and high schools in Vinton.
We offer a wide variety of coursework and extracurricular activities to allow students to challenge themselves and find their passion. These efforts result in a well-rounded, organized program of studies emphasizing the mastery of basic skills. No matter what you choose to study or participate in, you’re always a Viking when you are at VSCSD! You’ll be surrounded by school spirit and a dedicated, close-knit community cheering you on towards success. Our district is committed to academic excellence, and everyone on our staff is a committed difference-maker.
Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District’s mission is to be positive difference-makers! We want all our students to be empowered to reach their highest academic and personal potential. The educational program at all levels is grounded in the basics and has been carefully developed to meet the diverse needs and abilities of our students. We strive to achieve academic excellence every day, challenging not only our students to learn at high levels, but also our staff members as well. The Vinton-Shellsburg school district is the right size (approximately 1675 students). It is large enough to provide a full curriculum, yet small enough to offer personal touches. Our pupil-to-teacher ratio is a very favorable 12.8:1. We are continuously working to create new teaching methods, improve technology, and find new ways for our students to learn. Our 1:1 computer initiative means we have laptop computers for every student Kindergarten through 12th grade with our high school students (Grades 9-12) having personal access to those laptops 24/7.
ATHLETICS
VSCSD offers 14 competitive sports throughout the seasons, including a unique swimming program that includes both boys and girls teams. Our coaches do an excellent job of developing our student-athletes who compete within the WaMaC Conference. Being a Viking athlete builds teamwork and communication skills that shape future leaders on and off the court.
